Mirnyi/Nestor down Bryan Brothers to capture title – AEGON Championships 2012
In a rematch of French Open final, world’s number one doubles team, Max Mirnyi and Daniel Nestor, defeated the second ranked pair of Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan in straight sets 6-3, 6-4 in the AEGON Championships title match on Sunday.
The Belarusian-Canadian duo needed just 51 minutes to beat the twins and capture the title.
Mirnyi/Nestor and the Bryans started the contest by holding their serve in the first two games and equalising the score at 1-1. The Belarusian-Canadian tandem struck in the third game and consolidated on it to take a 3-1 lead.
Serving to stay in the set at 3-5, the best doubles team in the history of the sport, Bryans, faltered under pressure and lost it 3-6.
The Belarusian-Canadian team banged in a couple of aces and 60 percent of the first serves in the opening set. They won most of the points on the first deliveries and second returns, claiming 11 of the 12 and three of the four
points on them respectively.
None of the two teams lost their serve in the first nine games of the second set to take the score to 5-4 in favour of Mirnyi and Nestor. Bob and Mike once again failed to hold their serve at the crucial moment and went down 4-6.
Mirnyi and Nestor served exceptionally well, as they bombarded five aces and did not commit any double fault. The right and left hand combination had a stunning conversion rate, clinching 13 of the 14 first and seven of the nine
second delivery points. Mirnyi and Nestor did not face any break threat and availed the only chance they received in the second set.
The top seeds had also beaten the Bryans in the French Open final last week. A jubilant Nestor said, after the match, “We could not have done better. We did great transitioning from clay to grass. It's never easy. We got through
each match and Max played really well, just as he did in Paris. Today he was the best player on the court. We're trying to ride the wave as best as we can.”
He added, “It’s unbelievable beating these guys two weeks in a row in finals. They are probably our toughest opponents and the best team in the world over the long term. Max was serving really well, I think we’ve made a good switch
over to grass. Now we have to stay sharp for Wimbledon.”
This was Nestor’s fourth and Mirnyi’s first title on the grass courts of Queen’s Club.
