Mirnyi/Nestor overwhelm the Polish Power to claim season finale – ATP World Tour Finals 2011
Third seeded Bulgarian-Canadian duo of Max Mirnyi and Daniel Nestor stood tall against the ‘Polish Power’, Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski, in the final of the season ending grand finale, the Barclays ATP (Association
of Tennis Professionals) World Tour Finals, on Sunday night.
Being played on the indoor hard courts of the glorious O2 Arena in London, the doubles final witnessed an amazing exhibition of sheer dominance from Mirnyi and Nestor, who took just 79 minutes to wind up the contest in straight
sets, 7-5, 6-3, coming out as the champions.
“We feel great to have been able to win the tournament,” said Mirnyi after their emphatic victory. “We're very excited to have done it without losing a match. We felt that we built confidence throughout the week because we escaped
a few very close matches early on in the tournament. Today, towards the end of the match, I felt we both played pretty good.”
The Polish duo suffered their third successive defeat at the hands of Mirnyi and Nestor in doubles encounters to trail 0-3 all-time. Fyrstenberg and Matkowski also lost their only round robin match in straight sets to the third
seeds earlier in the tournament and repeated the similar performance on Sunday to finish as the runner-up at the last ATP event of the year.
Undefeated in the tournament, Mirnyi and Nestor stunned the world number one duo of the Bryan Brothers, Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan of the United States, in the semi-finals and carried on their winning impetus in the final matchup
on Sunday to reach glory in style. The third seeds dropped merely two points on their first serve, clinching 31 out of 33 points, en route to victory, while the Polish pair lagged far behind with just 19 points in the game.
Mirnyi and Nestor crafted seven break opportunities in the contest and converted three of them to drive their opponents out of the competition in an assertive manner. Out of 115 total points being played in the matchup, Mirnyi
and Nestor secured 67 and the Pole competitors collected just 48 to finish on the losing side.
Mirnyi and Nestor’s victory on Sunday night propelled them to the number two spot in the latest South African Airlines 2011 ATP World Rankings released on Monday. They now have four ATP doubles championship titles to their name
in the current year, including the all prestigious Barclays ATP World Tour Finals trophy as well.
