Mirnyi/Nestor plonk Lindstedt/Tecau in Group B – Barclays ATP World Tour Finals 2012
Belarusian-Canadian duo, Max Mirnyi and Daniel Nestor, hit back to overpower the fourth seeds, Sweden’s Robert Lindstedt and Romania’s Horia Tecau, in a three-set nail-biter at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals on Monday. They juggled up a 4-6, 7-6(1), 12-10 victory against their rivals to take lead in Group B at this year-ending tournament taking place in London, England.
Seeded second in this event, Mirnyi and Nestor made a drastic entry at this indoor hard court event taking place from 5th to 12th November. After earning the fame in one hour and 36 minutes, Mirnyi and Nestor improved to a 6-1 lifetime in the FedEx ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Head 2 Head Series against the lower seeds and moved a step closer towards semis.
The fourth ranked doubles team, Lindstedt and Tecau stepped into the O2 Arena with poise. They swiftly slid their entire serves without facing any real challenge. The Swedish-Romanian junction got the breakthrough in the ninth game and bagged the opener with a 6-4 win. They converted one out of three break chances to their advantage.
In the following set, both teams displayed tremendous skills and co-ordination. Mirnyi and Nestor dusted away both breakpoints they faced to keep their entire serves. However, they failed to cash their both break opportunities and prolonged the set to a tie-breaker. The Belarusian-Canadian tandem went berserk in it and went on a six-point killing spree. They held their composure and eventually carved out the equaliser with a 7-6(1) success.
The match could have gone in any direction but the higher ranked tandem maintained consistency in their game in the super tie-breaker. Mirnyi and Nestor edged past their opponents in it and ultimately clinched the decider with a 12-10 score line.
Elsewhere, the top seeded American duo, Bob and Mike Bryan, faced a bitter reality. They managed to get back in game after pulling out the equaliser. However, the twins were underplayed again in the super tie-breaker, eventually suffering a 5-7, 7-5, 9-11 loss at the hands of sixth seeded Spaniards, Marcel Granollers and Marc Lopez. The American veterans clobbered a better first serve share but after dropping their serve twice, they endured the shocking defeat.
