Mirnyi/Nestor topple the Bryan Brothers to defend their title – French Open 2012
World number one duo of Max Mirnyi and Daniel Nestor successfully defended their Roland Garros title, as they defeated one of the best doubles team of tennis history, Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan, in straight sets 6-4, 6-4 in the French
Open final in Paris.
The Belarusian-Canadian team took one hour and 35 minutes to down the American twins and win their second Grand Slam crown together.
Mirnyi/Nestor and Bryans started the contest by winning their serve in the first four games, evening out the score at 2-2. The Belarusian-Canadian tandem snatched a break point in the fifth and held their next serve to build a
4-2 lead. Mirnyi and Nestor sustained their advantage till the end and served it out at 5-4.
The Belarusian-Canadian pair pounded three aces and 74 percent of the first serves, converting 19 of the 26 of them into points. They neither commit any double fault nor made any unforced error, hitting three winners in the opener.
Both teams missed break chances in the opening two games of the second set, taking the score to 1-1. Mirnyi and Nestor struck a vital blow in the third and consolidated on it to move ahead 3-1. The Belarusian-Canadian duo did not
lose their serve even once till the conclusion of the match, capitalising on their second match point to close it 6-4.
The right and left-hand combination bombarded five aces on their American rivals but also committed a couple of double faults this time. They had a satisfactory conversion rate, winning 16 of the 25 first and 13 of the 23 second
delivery points.
Nestor said, talking to the reporters after the match, "Unbelievable. It's a great feeling. It might have been not the best match by some of us on the court today, including myself and definitely them. But Max was very solid from
start to finish. He played great. He carried us. That was important today. Regardless of the fact, a slam is a slam and to beat the best team probably of all time in the finals is a good feeling."
Mirnyi and Nestor made muted celebrations after winning their second successive French Open title. Mirnyi said, on this, "We just probably have too much respect for the opposition today. We've beaten them many times. We've lost
to them probably more times than beat them.”
Bryans lost their second Grand Slam final on the succession, as they had also went down in the Australian Open title match at the hands of Leander Paes and Radek Stepanek.
