Mirza Basic thrashes Tennys Sandgren in 2nd qualifying – Charlottesville Challenger 2011
Sixth seeded Mirza Basic got the better of American Tennys Sandgren in the second qualifying round of Charlottesville Challenger 2011.
After one hour and fifty nine minutes the sixth seed (Basic) survived a mid match slip of 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 on indoor hard courts of the Boar’s Head Sports Club in Charlottesville, Virginia on Sunday the 30th of October 2011.
During the first set of the match Basic managed to hit 59 percent of his first serves on target but bagged 71 percent of first serve points won. He also had a geometric precision and did not commit any double faults. Instead, he accomplished two aces and benefitted from two out of the four breakpoints won.
Although he only accomplished 39 percent of his first return points won, he managed to take a notch higher in his second return points won and improved his total return points of the set.
Initiating the first set of the match was Basic and he successfully managed to hold his service game to open the scoreboard at 1-0. Trailing behind was Sandgren, who too held his serve and eased himself on the scoreboard at 1-1. The players then traded in breaks and once more the score had tied at 2-2.
From there onwards the players had balanced the score for the last time at 3-3 in the sixth game as the players won on their respective serves. However, in the last three games, basic held his serve and then capitalized on a second break to clog the opening set with a 6-3 victory. He had now taken a competitive edge in the match.
The second set of the match was initiated by Sandgren and this time he pulled up his socks to take a notch higher in his performance. During this set the players once more matched a blow for a blow and tied the game at three games each by the end of the sixth game. In a reversal of fate, during the last two games of the set, Sandgren had managed to reel of two successive games to clog the set with a 6-3 victory.
As each player had bagged a set apiece, the third set of the match was once again inaugurated by Basic and this time he was able to squander two games in a row to take a mini lead of 2-0. However, Sandgren managed to close the deficit in the following two games with a break and a hold of serve.
In subsequent four games, the players won on respective serves and the scoreboard had shifted to 4-4 by the end of the eighth game. During the ninth and the tenth game, Basic held his serve and as his opponent double faulted, he sealed his victory of the set and the match.
Next up for the sixth seed is fourth seeded American Jesse Levine in the final qualies of the event.
