Mirza/Rodionova roll past Bremond/Garcia to reach the quarters – PTT Pattaya Open 2012
Top seed, India’s Sania Mirza and Australia’s Anastasia Rodionova, trashed the French duo, Iryna Bremond and Caroline Garcia, with a bagel at the PTT Pattaya Open 2012 on Wednesday. They clobbered a 6-0, 6-2 success against their rivals to advance into the
final eight at this WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) International event taking place in Pattaya City, Thailand.
First-time paired Mirza and Rodionova, displayed flawless performance at the Dusit Thani Hotel and crushed the French tandem in straight sets in 43-minutes. They went on an eight game winning run to formulate this amazing score line in their opening round
match.
The Indo-Aussie duo thundered into the opening set and went on a six games killing spree. They blocked the only breakpoint they came across and cashed in all three break opportunities to seal the success with an exceptional 6-0 score line.
Mirza and Rodionova kept their rhythm in the following set and earned the desiderated break in the opening game. Later they held remaining serves through perfect co-ordination and capitalised on another break chance in the seventh game, subsequently pocketing
the set with a 6-2 win.
Overall, the winning combination of Mirza and Rodionova sought seven break chances and converted five to their advantage. They clobbered a lower first serve share of 61 percent as opposed to their opponents’ 66 percent and spilled more errors. However, the
Indo-Aussie team brilliantly registered 20 out of 25 points on it.
Next up for the highest ranked doubles team at this tournament is the local tandem, Vara Wongteanchai and Varu Wongteanchai, who trashed the Slovakian pair of Dominika Cibulkova and Janette Husarova in straight sets to reach this spot. The Thai collaboration
saved six breakpoints and capitalised on six out of 10 break chances to overpower.
The second seeded junction, Greek Eleni Daniilidou and Thai Tamarine Tanasugarn, will join the top seeds in the second round. They trashed the Japanese-Chinese pair of Misaki Doi and Xiao Zhou in straight sets in almost an hour long marathon.
The winning seeds lost their serve once but broke Doi and Zhou’s serve three times to bag the opener with a 6-3 success.
Daniilidou and Tanasugarn improved their form in the following set and despite failing to save the only breakpoint they faced, the second seeds cashed in all three break opportunities to clinch the set with a 6-2 score line.
The Greek-Thai tandem will square off against the Japanese-Austrian collaboration of Shiho Akita and Nicole Rottmann in the quarter-finals.
