Misaki Doi gets rid of Coco Vandeweghe in opening round – HP Japan Open 2011
Japanese Misaki Doi got rid of the American teenager Coco Vandeweghe in straight sets of 6-4, 6-4 during the main draw of the HP Japan Open 2011. Battling it out on the outdoor hard courts of the Utsubo Tennis Center in Osaka,
Japan, Doi outwitted her American opponent in simply one hour and thirty five minutes on Monday the 10th of October 2011.
The American teenager decided to go first as she had just won the service toss but she was unable to hold her serve and got off on the wrong foot. On the contrary, Doi not only capitalized from an early break but also held her
serve and in doing so, she took a mini lead of 2-0. In the following two games the players held serve and by the end of the fourth game the scoreboard had rotated to 3-1.
Vandeweghe double faulted on her second serve in the fifth game and endorsed a game to her adversary, who then held serve and further increased the gap to 5-1. Although, Doi was only a game away, but it was Coco’s turn to serve
and as she bagged a game, she further went on to breaking her opponent and reduced the deficit to 5-4 by the end of the ninth game. Nevertheless, Doi smashed a winner down the T and clogged the opening set with a deftly 6-4 victory.
The second set was also opened by Vandeweghe and she again double faulted on her serve and gifted away the initial game to her opponent, who then held serve and successfully placed herself on the scoreboard at 2-0. In the following
four games the players held serve and although the deficit was reduced to 2-3 by Coco, she was still unable to muster the numbers.
On the other hand, Doi was leading the game by a break and a game. As the players again held serve for the following three games, Doi was now only a game away from her victory, while, Coco had further reduced the deficit to 4-5.
The set could’ve moved into a tie breaker but as Doi was a better player, she smashed a couple of backhand and forehand crosscourt shots. In doing so, she bagged the set and the match to secure a place in the second round of the event.
