Misaki Doi jolts Anna Tatishvili in the qualifiers – BNP Paribas Open 2012
Japanese starlet, Misaki Doi, surprised everyone by upsetting the qualifier’s fourth seed, Anna Tatishvili, in straight sets at the BNP Paribas Open 2012 on Monday. She nudged up a 6-3, 6-4 score line against the world number 73 to reach the final qualifying round at this Premier Mandatory event taking place in Indian Wells, California, United States.
The left-handed Japanese put up a solid display of tennis to stun Tattishvili in an hour and 12-minute battle. Facing each other for the first time, Doi assertively advanced in the qualifying competition at this WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) event.
The 20-year-old high spiritedly entered the Indian Wells Tennis Garden and after breaking the Georgian’s serve three times, she clinched the opener with a 6-3 score line. Despite losing her serve twice, she clobbered a higher first serve share and brilliantly clicked eight out of 14 points on it.
Doi kept momentum rolling into the following set and in spite of failing to block both breakpoints she came across; the Japanese cashed in three out of four break opportunities and pocketed the set with a 6-4 win.
Summing up the world number 127 performance, Doi committed five double faults and clobbered a slightly lower first serve share of 54 percent as compared to the Georgian’s 55 percent. However, she capitalised on six out of nine break chances to earn the glory.
Next challenge for the Japanese is the 20th seed, Casey Dellacqua from Australia. The Aussie crushed the British rising star, Laura Robson, with a breadstick to set-up this date. Dellacqua swept away five out of six breakpoints she encountered and cashed in all five break chances to manipulate an amazing 6-3, 6-1 victory.
On the other side of the draw, 24th seeded Kristina Barrois outshined the French blooming star, Aravane Rezai, in a three set thriller at the opening round of the qualifying competition.
The 30-year-old required almost two hours to overpower Rezai with a 6-7(3), 6-2, 6-1 score line in their third outing. She lost her serve once in the entire match and broke the French’s serve five times to pocket this match.
