Misaki Doi upsets Olga Puchkova in the round two – HP Japan Open 2012
Local challenger, Misaki Doi, gave a straight sets shocker to her Russian rival, Olga Puchkova, in the second round of the HP Japan Women’s Open 2012. Doi consolidated her 6-3, 6-2 triumph on the hard courts of Osaka, Japan. She
concluded the match in nearly one hour and 14 minutes on Wednesday.
The duo encountered each other for the first time at the hard courts of the Malaysian Open held at Kuala Lumpur. The Japanese challenger consolidated her win after a three set thriller 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 in the first round, earlier
in this year.
World number 101, Puchkova, fired four aces but had an average initial serve precision of 69 percent with 11 of 20 first and just two of nine second delivery points. She was able to attain just one of eight serve breaks in the
set. In comparison to that, her Japanese junior had a relatively better initial serve of 79 percent with 21 of 33 first and four of nine second delivery points.
The 21-year-old commenced a classic start in the opening set and maintained her upper hand throughout the contest. She grabbed the initial two games and stamped her 2-love lead by the end of the second game. She sustained her momentum
from the very start and confidently preserved her command. Her impact disheartened her rival and helped the local to prolong her pace. She dusted away all the serve breaks put forward by the Russian and edged past her terminating the opener with a 6-3 score
line.
In the second set, Doi cashed away the 25-year-old Russian professional’s first serve and grabbed the opportunity to mark a 2-love lead, like the previous set. However, the Russian senior proved completely dormant and did not prove
compatible to her challenger. The Japanese displayed an exceptional start to the second set and thudded her rival with powerful forehands. She held her serve the entire time in the second set and preserved her might. She continued her winning energy and gave
no chance to his opponent to level down the score line. Eventually, the Japanese challenger wrapped up the match with a 6-2 win.
For the next round, Doi will battle against the winner of the match between seventh seeded, Chanelle Scheepers and Mirjana Lucic.
