Malaysia’s Misbun Ramdan Misbun and Goh Soon Huat put up a spirited performance against their senior opponents, in the first round of the 2011 Malaysia Open GP Gold, at Alor Setar, Malaysia, on May 4. Despite the courageous effort from both players, neither of them could win their games against the experienced campaigners.
Misbun Ramdan lost his match against Hong Kong’s best shuttler, Chan Yan Kit, in three sets of 42 minutes. It was a superb match that drew the attention of the Malaysian crowd. The young Malaysian remained toe-to-toe with the skillful Chan Yan. However, he lost the match by a narrow margin in a thrilling three-game match.
Goh Soon lost to semi-finalist of India Open Super Series, Park Sung Hwan of Korea, in three games. The Malaysian matched the speed of the opponent throughout the match, but lost to the much experienced Korean.
National coach for back-up shuttlers, Hendrawan, appreciated the performance of the youngsters against their senior rivals. He was happy with the considerable improvement in the technical and tactical aspects of the shuttlers.
