Misbun Sidek may coach backup-up shuttlers of Malaysia national team
Malaysia’s Misbun Sidek, former coach of the men’s singles national squad, is expected to train the back-up shuttlers of the national team except Lee Chong Wei, who is working under the supervision of Rashid Sidek and Tey Seu Bock.
The Badminton Association of Malaysia has handed over a new contract for review to Misbun, but the terms of the contract have not yet been made public. However, rumours suggest Misbun will be working to groom the second string of elite shuttlers. The final
decision about his appointment will be made in the meeting of BAM to be held on 28 April, 2011.
Ng Chin Chai, the secretary of BAM, did not reveal the nature of the contract given to Misbun.
“He has agreed to consider the contract that we had given him. I do not have the prerogative to divulge details of the contract or the content of our discussion – not until after the matters are brought up at the exco meeting (April 28),” said Chin Chai.
The BAM secretary added, “I hope everyone will be patient and let us do our work and give us the room to follow the right procedures. His role will be clearly defined during the exco meeting.”
Misbun resigned from the position of national coach for men’s singles on 31 December, 2010. After three months of seclusion, he has come back to join the national team once again. However, his role will be different now as there are other coaches in the
men’s singles quad who are working quite well.
If Misbun is assigned the task to train the second squad, then he will be working with the back-up shuttlers of the national squad including Liew Daren, Tan Chun Seang, Chong Wei Feng and Chan Kwong Beng.
There are also some other shuttlers who are expected to become a part of the national team and will be handed over to Misbun. Mohamad Arif Abdul Latif is at the top among these young players currently working under the supervision of the Indonesian coach,
Hendrawan. Latif is expected to join the squad at the end of 2011.
