Misbun Sidek rejects proposal offered by Badminton Association of Malaysia
Malaysia’s former National coach for singles, Misbun Sidek, has rejected the proposal of Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) in which he was offered to train the back-up shuttlers, instead of Lee Chong Wei.
The BAM deputy president, Kamil Ismail Idris Shah, revealed in the meeting that Misbun had rejected their proposal of training young shuttlers with a lucrative salary package. The coach has also mentioned that Misbun has not revealed any reason for this
decision.
“The exco respected his decision and unanimously accepted it,” said Ismail.
He also added, “And we take this opportunity to appreciate him for his services and contributions to the many successes in Malaysian badminton over the years with the BAM.”
Misbun’s friend, Syed Abu Bakar Abdullah, who is the president of Terengganu Badminton Association, was not happy with this decision.
“Misbun should have accepted this offer. This was an opportunity for him to develop new talent and be a prominent coach in the national team,” said Abu Bakar.
Due to some differences with BAM’s Training and Coaching Committee, Misbun resigned from the position of National coach on December 31, 2010. However, he withdrew his resignation in March 2011, but was unable to get his former position, now filled by Rashid
Sidek and Teh Seu Bock, the current coaches of Chong Wei.
Misbun has been serving Malaysia for the last 20 years. He produced many competent shuttlers who raised the Malaysian flag at international level. He has been coaching Chong Wei for many years and helped him achieve the top world ranking. Under his charge,
Chong Wei clinched the silver medal in the 2008 Olympic Games and also won the Men’s singles title in the All England Open.
After the statement of Chong Wei, that he is comfortable with the current coaches Rashid Sidek and Teh Seu Bock, BAM decided that Misbun would train the back-up shuttlers and offered him a lucrative salary and other perks. But the coach has turned down this
offer without stating any reason. For many people associated with the game in Malaysia, this is not a happy ending of Misbun’s professional career as a coach.
