Question:

Misc about Cabo San Lucas?

So I'm leaving in 2 days and trying to figure out some last minute questions. I know not to drink the water, but what about the water they use to cook food in and then if we go to the bars and get mixed drinks, the soda is mixed with water as well as the ice cubes.... will that be ok or should i avoid it? I'm staying at the Grand Mayan Resort, any ideas how the water will be there? Also, I have no clue where I read this, but I remember seeing something about only being able to use credit cards at the resort - like they dont take cash? Could that be right? Any help is appreciated, thanks so much!

  1. In most hotels in Mexico, it is safe to drink the water. When we went to Puerto Vallarta, they advised us not to drink the water in any restaurant. We drank bottled water in restaurants. We did not get sick at all drinking water right out of the tap in the hotel. We mostly drank beer instead of mixed drinks, however we did have a margarita at one restaurant. Did not get sick.

I doubt that a hotel would only take credit cards. The US dollar is pretty much accepted everywhere in Mexico.

  2. I always get sick when I drink the water on it's own, so I've learned not to ever do it, even when it's from a purified bottle.  I was born in Mx and every year we used to go back an visit during Christmas and since I was younger & didn't know any better I'd drink the water and instantly become ill.  The Dr. explained that their purifying system is not as good as the one in the U.S.  However, I've been to Cabo, Cancun, Mazatlan, etc. and never got sick out of mixed drinks or food, ice......so you should be ok.  If you feel like having a lemonade though ask for it to be made with mineral water.  Coffee, soups anything else should be fine.

Not sure about the cash deal, because I've never stayed at the hotel you mention but it doesn't make sense that they wouldn't except it.  I think you can call ahead and ask just to be on the safe side.  OH and when you get to the airport don't fall for any free offers of anything, like....snorkeling, glass botoom boat, etc. they try to get you to sign up and then once you agree to it, you have to take a tour of a certain hotel for like hours, loosing out on your vacation time! and they're really just trying to convince you to buy into a time share.....JUST SAY NO THANKS! and walk away real quick.

    Good Luck and have Fun

  3. You will more than likely suffer an episode of "tourista" while in Mexico.  Especially if its your first time here.  It comes from bad bacterias that we are not used to.  My recommendation to all that come here, eat a pot of yogurt every morning and you will not get sick.  Simple!

You can get tourista from the water, the food, handling money, touching things, breathing in the air.  It's usually uncomfortable and lasts a few days - get lomitil if it does.

I often get a respiratory infection because they spray gray water on the boulevard grass and when I'm running I breath it in.....Lots of people I know get an ear infection from the swimming pools and ocean.  Almost everyone who comes gets a bout of tourista (diarrhea)!

The water in San Jose del Cabo is very good for most times of the year.  I brush my teeth with it.  However, the time you are going to be here (aug-oct) can be iffy and I would stick to bottled water.  don't worry about ice cubes or mixed drinks.  I'm sure the Mayan will have the highest standard in food prep anyway.

You can use cash and credit almost everywhere now.  Your resort is no different.  I rarely have cash on me.  I use debit cards and credit cards.  There are machines everywhere.

Have an excellent holiday.  See you on the boulevard!

  4. you should drink whatever is in the cup with ice as fast as possible before the ice melts into the drink. and if they cook with the water, that means that the water is getting cleaner because the heat. and im not sure about the resort you are staying at, but im sure you can look it up on the internet.

  5. Have a great trip.  Don't worry about the water in Cabo.  I would worry more about rape and things like that.  Be carefull & have a great trip!

  6. I have been to few resorts in Cabo and everyone of them has taken cash.  Unless your specific resort doesn't take cash then I think that you were misinformed.  American money in Cabo is just as typical as Pesos.  I would also recommend using cash in all the bars though, and about the only place I would use a credit card would be at an established resort or a reputable restaurant.  I know people that have been charged crazy amounts on their credit card down there at bars.  Avoid the hassle and use cash downtown and at bars, you can easily find ATM machines.

As far as the water goes, at restaurants if I order a water I will get a bottled water. The food is fine too, the water thing has never been an issue.  I have never had a problem with mixed drinks and Ice, you will see that there will be a lot of mixed drinks going.  If you want to play it safe stick with beer, or wine, but I think you are OK with mixed drinks.
