Mischa Zverev, Stefan Seifert win second round qualies – Eckental Challenger 2011
On October 30, 2011, Mischa Zverev (Germany) played against compatriot Peter Torebko in the men’s singles qualifying match at 2011 Eckental Challenger. The match was a highly competitive one as both the sets entered into a tiebreaker.
24-year old Zverev did win the match 7-6 (3), 7-6 (0), however, he was a bit rusty with his shot selection. In the first set, 23-year old Torebko scored five aces while Zverev was unable to deliver single ace.
If Zverev was not taking risks with his serves, Torebko was not able to get his shots clear the nets, for he had six double faults in the first set. In the second set, both players had double faults twice with Zverev scoring six
aces and his opponent scoring seven.
During the match, Zverev could not save any of the three break points he conceded but Torebko was able to save eight out of eleven break points. Going into the second set of the match, Zverev increased his first serve winning percentage
considerably as compared to his ratio in the first set.
Ranked at 275th in the world, Zverev barely managed to clinch victory from 272nd Torebko. Both German players were giving each other a tough time but Zverev won the match and made his entry into the next round.
The other qualifying match contested on October 30, 2011 was between Tomasz Bednarek (Poland) and Stefan Seifert (Germany) which the German won, 7-6 (4), 4-1. The 26-year old Seifert had to face resistance from his Polish opponent
who took the first set into a tiebreaker. Ranked at 1029th place in the world, Bednarek scored seven aces in the first set while Seifert could not score any aces.
The Polish player could save one break point out of the three he conceded while the German could not save any of his two break points. Seifert did not score any ace in the first set, but he had a fifty-seven percent first serve
success rate, an indication that he was playing cautiously.
In the first set, Bednarek had a thirty-one percent first serve success rate and he had seven double faults. In the second set, Seifert was in the lead as he scored four aces and saved both of his break points. He had a sixty-four
percent first serve success rate as compared to the forty-four percent rate his Polish opponent secured.
The German had a wide lead in the second set with scores at 4-1, when Bednarek sustained an injury and had to retire from the match, giving the victory to Seifert. Earlier in the tournament, Seifert won his qualifying match in
the first round against compatriot Peter Gojowczyk, 7-5, 6-3. Seifert is having a good run in the qualifying rounds of the tournament for he has been consistent in his game.
