  1. Religious fundamentalism & intollerance of other views, plus lack of an education system for the common man, other than that provided by fundamentalist religious groups, appear to be the things holding back a country that should be one of the most affluent countries in the World.

Military forms of government have never provided growth & stability, nor have theocratic forms of government.  Both tend to repress the people & deter the independent thought so needed for economic development.

Tribal forms of government will always be "anti unity" & are not likely to support anyone outside the tribe. Therefore tribal leaders are likely to guard their authority at the expense of any & all others.  Pakistan needs to invest heavily in infrastructure & education if they want to provide a better life for the common person.

  2. Pakistan needs a widespread, secular education system, (the mudrassars are religion based,) and no more money wasted on nuclear weapons, when it could have been invested in infrastructure for industrial expansion.

  3. I have to agree with Ed.  Pakistan is suffering from religious intolerance and tribal feuding.  In America, for example, there are many different groups but generally they share in common their desire to be American and they are tolerant.  We don't tolerate intolerance.  When your first allegiance is to a group that has sworn enemies or with a religion that is intolerant of other beliefs, then war and fighting will dominate.  You cannot have a reasonable standard of living when your country hobbles itself by intollerance to various thought.   I certainly don't consider myself unbiased.  I am annoyed at Pakistan for the World Trade Center as well as the Taliban and I think they haven't really paid a price for the crimes they fostered.

  4. Asalam-o-Alaikum,

    Brother,

It is only because of lack of education and the corruption of past governments due to which citizens have never enjoyed the true potential of their nation (in business/economy sense).

Once education pours in, feudalism/tribalism would vanish and progress will come to Pakistan.

President Musharraf is trying day and night. Hopefully it will get better.
