UEFA have confirmed Chelsea striker http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Fernando-Torres-c13707 as the winner of the Golden Boot award for the European Championships 2012.
The 28-year-old Spain striker not only scored in the final against http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Spain-c3011’s 4-0 win over the Italians gave the 2010 World Cup winners yet another trophy to celebrate.
While Spain will certainly be very happy with the European Championships victory, Torres will be especially glad. The former http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chelsea-c38786 in the January transfer window of
2011.
Chelsea signed Torres in the second half of the 2010-2011 season for a record breaking fee of 50 million pounds on a long term deal. Unfortunately for the striker and the London side, Torres was unable to find the back of the net and since joining the Blues
has not managed to score too many goals.
In 67 appearances in all competitions, Torres has scored just 12 goals, which make him somewhat of a flop at his new side. However, the statistics don’t tell half the story of the struggling striker, who has had to compete with Didier Drogba for a place
in the squad.
During the latter half of last season though, Torres was given a chance under then caretaker manager Roberto Di Matteo and he did well. Not only did he score against http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Barcelona-c38604 in the semi-finals on the Champions League, it was only after he came on in the
final that Drogba equalized against Bayern Munich.
With a FA Cup and UEFA Champions League trophy and now the European Championships to his name, Torres has done better than expected. The fact that he has managed to secure the Golden Boot proves the striker is on the way up.
