Global warming! If carbon is the biggest polluter causing the most damage towards global warming, why donesn't the world address that as being the main source of the problem?? No were told we should recycle, use different light bulbs, buy hybrids etc..

  1. Well, Carbon Dioxide, (CO2), isn't the only greenhouse gas poluting our earth and incresing the size of the atmosphere.

Green·house Gas ['grEn-"haus 'gas]. Any gas that absorbs infra-red radiation in the atmosphere. Greenhouse gases include water vapor, carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O), halogenated fluorocarbons (HCFCs) , ozone (O3), perfluorinated carbons (PFCs), and hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs).

The Canadian Gouvernment, is already demolishing some factories. But, maybe your asking this question because America, where you might live, Geroge Bush isn't demolishing any factories. Yeah he's a lazy donkey, but California is starting to reduce greenhouses gases like everyone other country is, except America ><

  2. you are right.  Those things you listed reduce the amount of carbon emitted, but they dont completely stop emissions, meaning we still didnt fix the problem.

life needs carbon to survive, and co2 is constantly being locked up at the bottom of the sea floor, in the form of soil, or in the form of the things we build.  We are only fertilizing the world right now.

  3. Nothing I've seen says recycling will stop global warming.  It's good for the earth, and will help keep our landfills from filling up.  So, unless you're thinking you want to donate your backyard to the garbage dumps of America...

Hybrids might help a little to affect global warming; ultimately they're cheaper because they get a lot more miles to the gallon.  That's why E-85 hasn't taken off -- you lose in gas mileage more than you save per gallon.

  4. First things first, you will not find,in any dictionary or other means, that carbon is a pollutant.CO2 is not considered a pollutant but CO is.There are many carbon based compounds that are harmful, but carbon is the building block of life.Without it all most nothing would exist, currently their are over 10 million carbon based compounds. The main gist of the problem is determining if man is totally responsible for GW.This has led to many disputes among the scientific community as to what part we play.

I believe in recycling but have questions and doubts about the other two you listed.

  5. It is being addressed. Just about anything you do from what you eat, buy, build, to how you travel, recycle, compost, through away, etc, all have an impact into putting or sometimes reduce the amount of CO2 into the air. That is not to say CO2 is bad but it is to say too much of it is. In the last 650,000 year we currently have the highest count of CO2 emissions than has ever been recorded.

We have nearly 7 billion people many of them starting to live the American lifestyle with cars refrigerators, modern heating and cooling, TV, air travel, plastic bag use, etc. It does not take a brain surgeon to realize that not only is there going to be an effect but a pretty profound one at that.

  6. Recycling has nothing to do with global warming, but it sounds "environmentally responsible" so people always say it.

Energy saving light bulbs and hybrid cars can reduce the amount of carbon in the air though, because they use less energy requiring less fuel to be burned which emits less carbon dioxide into the air.

  7. I  - Efficient lighting

    Standard incandescent light: 5 lumen/watt

    CFL lightbulb: 40-60 lumen/watt

LED light: up to 80 lumen/watt.

That means that for the same quantity of light (in lumen) you use less electricity (in watt). The production of 1MWh in the US leads to roughly 600Kg of CO2.

    II - Recycling:

Primary steel: 1.6 tonne CO2/tonne of steel produced

Recycled steel: 0.8 tonne CO2/tonne of steel produced

Primary Aluminium: 19.0 tonne CO2/tonne of aluminium produced

Recycled Aluminium: 1.0 tonne CO2/tonne of aluminium produced

    III: Hybrid cars:

    100g CO2 per 100km for hybrid cars

over 200g CO2 per 100km for regular cars

  8. Recycling to me also means handing items on.  This means that the recipient is not buying a new item, thus saving on the all of the carbon emissions that come with its manufacture.  This is the antithesis to a 'throwaway society'.
