  1. Dashi is added for flavor. It is fish based. COuld it be that?

  2. Several people have given you possibly correct answers.

If you are referring to the soup base, I would also say either Awase Miso (basically a combination of red and white paste) or Aka (red) Miso or Akadashi (red soup stock) Miso.

If it is something that is added to the soup itself, it could be Age or Abura Age (deep fried tofu) or Asari (clams).

  3. I don't know about an 'A' word...but in addition to Miso, they add Dashi, which is a fish broth...and it REALLY makes a difference in the tastiness of the soup.  I usually add some tofu, then freshly sliced mushrooms and scallions to finish.  Here's what Wiki has to say.......

    Good luck!

  4. Aburage (deep fried tofu sheet)

  5. I guess she added a sprinkle of AJINOMOTO, MSG=monosodium glutamate,

    as a secret ingredient.

  6. She could have been talking about the type of miso... you could be talking about Awase or Asawe?  Maybe that's the brand, I forget at the moment.  But there are different colors of miso... like red, white, and black.  But I know that if you want to eat some homemade miso soup, you should never get the packages with the powder in them... nasty stuff.  Always look for miso paste, which you can generally find at places like Whole Food or even an Asian market or a Japanese market if you have one nearby.  Put about 2 tablespoons in a small sauce pan with at least 2 cups of water, and boil.  Then, just add some wakame seaweed (NOT NORI) and tofu. =)

  7. I have no idea.  Most miso soups consist of miso paste, dashi stock, soy sauce, tofu slices and scallions.  I can't think of one thing that starts with an "A" that would be added to the soup.  Let me know if you find out.

    Good luck to you :-)

  8. it's arame... "ah-ra-may", a kind of noodle-like seaweed. there are other types of seaweeds you can put into your miso soup for a different flavor... like wakame, kombu & hijiki.

besides seaweeds, you can add tofu, spring onion, cabbage, mushrooms, salmon belly & clams to make a tasty, healthy soup/meal.
