Mission Accomplished: Chicago White Sox leave winter meetings, happy
The Chicago White Sox have been the surprise package, this winter. They brought back most of their star players and now the team looks good on the cards. General Manager Ken Williams looks very content with the squad and who wouldn’t be, given the recent
woes that could have come up, when the team players moved to the free agency.
Assistant General Manager, Rick Hahn, was one of the vibrant figures at the side. His negotiations with the players saw the team get back to the position they were in, last season. The team added new players to the squad and they’re now looking to strengthen
the bullpen up with some experience. A. J. Pierzynski was one of the players who moved onto the free agency. His return means the club has the right attitude, durability and talent behind the plate.
Pierzynski reinforcement meant that Paul Konerko was the next man to come back to the side and that he did on a three year contract, worth $37.5 million. Konerko has been important to the White Sox for a very long time and his addition went well with the
fans, who had done a lot to back the player in the recent years.
"Our fans, hey, listen, we have great, great fans, but the fact of the matter is you have to prove to White Sox fans that you are going to be worthy of discretionary spending," said Ken Williams, after holding a press conference on Paul’s signing. "And I
don't have a problem with it and kind of take pride in the fact that we have earned their support over the years.
The only thing the Chicago White Sox need is a veteran pitcher who can steer the young rotation of bullpen members; Matt Thornton, Sergio Santos, Tony Pena and potentially Chris Sale. The challenge is on but when the side has packed the batting order up
with Adam Dunn, the likelihood of a good season in 2011 seems like a possibility that could materialize.
"I've stated before that I feel comfortable, confident in the everyday lineup and the defense that we are going to put out there, as well as the starting rotation and the back four guys in the bullpen," Williams said. "But I think we've got to augment that,
just a bit, to make ourselves as strong as possible and contend for the division."
