Mississauga Steelheads of the Ontario Hockey League sign first round pick Damian Bourne –OHL Update
Damian Bourne, a 16-year-old forward who was selected 11th overall in the first round of the 2012 Ontario Hockey League (OHL) Priority Selection draft by Mississauga Steelheads, has been signed by the same team that had selected him.
General Manager and head coach of Mississauga Steelheads was very happy at the signing of Bourne and thinks that he would be a big contributor for the team as he said,
“Damian has all the skills to be a valuable contributor with our hockey club. He is a big mobile forward with a strong work ethic.”
Whereas Bourne said he's "honoured and proud to be a part of the Steelheads team.”
Oakville, Ontario resident, who played for Mississauga Rebels Midget last season, had an amazing first season as he scored 26 goals, 53 assists and 79 total points in just 62 games. This was an effort that impressed Steelheads and made them sign him.
The 6-foot-4, 183 pounder forward has also got physique that would attract anyone and it was something that got attention of James Boyd, head coach and general manager of Steelheads’, back in April. Not far away from his office, Boyd went to watch Bourne
play for Mississauga Rebels Midget and was very happy to see their 11th selected player available in that range as he had said,
“We expected him to fall within that range”.
Bourne is someone who is afraid of getting into physical activity as he had 89 Penalty in Minutes (PIM’s) last season and it was also something that had impressed Boyd as he had said back then,
“He’s got great size and skill, but what we really liked most about him was his compete level and how he works hard shift-to-shift.”
Back then, OHL Priority Selection Media Guide, had said that Bourne plays a power game and he is very effective when he gets in on the fore check, also help in eliminating the opponents from the puck creates big problems for the other teams as he had said,
“Plays a power forward type game and is most effective when he gets in on the fore check and eliminates opponents from the puck, drives the net and creates havoc for the other team.”
