Mississippi Rebels Kentrell Lockett to miss rest of season
Mississippi Rebels defensive end Kentrell Lockett will likely miss the remainder of the season after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee during a win over Fresno State in week four.
Lockett is a senior and is one of the clubs five captains. The youngster was having a solid season having made six tackles, one of which was for a loss, in only four outings. Lockett was key to the Rebels run defence as the hulking 6’5” 250 pounds lineman was
efficient at sealing off the end for the club.
With the injury to Lockett the job will fall to freshmen Delvin Jones and Cameron Whigham. Both youngsters are much smaller than Lockett and may have trouble with the South East Conference’s sizable offensive lines.
The Rebels have had a difficult time remaining consistent this season, now sitting at 2-2 in overall play and 0-1 in conference play. The record places them sixth in the SEC-West.
The Mississippi side suffered a season opening loss to Jacksonville State, which was followed by a win at Tulane and then a loss at home to Vanderbilt. Last week’s 55-38 win over Fresno State was an important one for the Rebels as they attempt to get back on
track before entering into a difficult portion of their schedule.
Mississippi will have to be sharp throughout the month of October as they take on University of Kentucky, #1 Alabama, #15 Arkansas, and #10 Auburn.
The Rebels are unlikely to do any real damage this season and although the injury to Lockett will hurt their defence in 2010 it should help to give freshmen Jones and Whigham garner experience for next year.
Mississippi will host the University of Kentucky on Saturday in week five action.
