Mississippi State booster Bill Bell says he received Cam Newton payment plan
Mississippi State booster Bill Bell said he received a text message from a man who was representing Auburn Tigers quarterback Cam Newton’s father Cecil Newton, outlining a payment plan.
Bell also mentioned that the man representing Cecil was booster Kenny Rogers, who Bell said he shared several voicemail and text messages with regarding money that was to be given to Cecil in exchange for a commitment letter from his son. Bell went into
detail saying that $80,000 was to be paid to Newton the day he signed with Mississippi State, then another $50,000 30 days later and a final payment of $50,000 60 days after the signing.
“When he asked for it, it was like ‘bam!’” Bell told ESPN. “He told me this kid’s dad is going to want money and the next day he sent me a text message. He didn’t say anything other than ‘This is what I want and I want it in three instalments.”
Allegations that Cecil Newton took money in exchange for his son’s commitment to Auburn arose at the end of October when Rogers went public, claiming that Cecil asked him for anywhere between $100,000 and $180,000 in exchange for Cam’s commitment to Mississippi
State.
“[Cecil Newton] didn’t come out and say, ‘I want $180,000,’” said Bell. “He inferred it and talked about it, but not directly. Kenny would talk about it in front of him, and [Cecil Newton] never corrected him or said, ‘No, that’s not what we’re doing.’”
However, when Rogers was unable to procure the money for Cecil, Cam committed to Auburn. According to Rogers, Cam called him the next day upset, saying he was sorry he could not come to Mississippi State, but his father said the money he received from Auburn
was too much to pass up.
Newton is currently still eligible to play, but is under investigation by the FBI, the state and the NCAA.
