Missouri Tigers pound California Golden Bears 92-53; Win CBE Classic – NCAA Basketball
Six players reached double figures as Missouri Tigers won the CBE Classic with an impressive 92-53 victory over California Golden Bears on November 22, 2011 in Kansas City. Marcus Denmon was declared the Most Valuable Player (MVP)
of the tournament.
"This is the best I have felt in my four years, because it's the most selfless team I've played on," Missouri’s guard Kim English said. "We are all 10 guys, plus three transfers – we are buying into the process every day."
English was a key part of Missouri’s victory as he topped all the scorers with 19 points on 7 for 12 shooting from the field, including 3 for 7 from downtown.
The player also grabbed four rebounds and dished out two assists in the victory. Senior guard Denmon had 18 points, six rebounds and four assists while Matt Pressey chipped in 13 points and pulled down five rebounds. Michael Dixon
added 11 points while Steve Moore and Ricardo Ratliffe ended with 10 points apiece.
Jorge Gutierrez led the Golden Bears with 11 points before fouling out with 11:12 remaining. California’s forward Richard Solomon was also fouled out with more than seven minutes to go in the game. Solomon added eight points, grabbed
five rebounds and stole the ball twice prior to his exit. Justin Cobb came off the bench with 10 points, four rebounds and four steals.
"They are aggressive," Jorge Gutierrez said of the two crucial fouls in the losing effort. "They play with a lot of intensity, and we felt it."
The Tigers ended the game on a 30 for 51 (58.8 percent) shooting from the field while allowing their opponents just 17 for 57 shots (29.8 percent). Golden Bears did outrebound Missouri 32-26 though, including 22-11 in the first
half.
The Tigers reeled off a 17-9 run in an eight-minute stretch of the first half and followed with a 12- 6 phase to take a 45-26 lead at halftime. Marcus Denmon made a three-point play early in the second half to increase the advantage
to 48-28. In the period that followed, Missouri pushed the cushion past 33-point and never allowed the Bears any chance to comeback.
