Missy Franklin achieves Women’s 200 freestyle gold: Day two – Mutual of Omaha Duel in the Pool
American freestyle champion, Missy Franklin stunned the aquatic crowd by proving her mettle for the title of Women’s 200m freestyle on day two of the 2011 Mutual of Omaha Duel in the Pool in Atlanta on Saturday, December 17.
The 16-year-old Franklin made her country proud by acquiring gold medal of the short course freestyle swim. With her irresistible efforts, she shattered hopes of her strongest rivals and her team-members, Dana Vollmer and Katie Hoff.
The American swimmers made a clean sweep by acquiring top three positions of the freestyle discipline. Franklin transpired as the strongest swimmer for gold spot of the race, where she completed her initial round with a wonderful timing of 26.48 seconds. She remained 0.35 seconds faster from her subsequent rival, Vollmer, who ended her first round with an effort of 26.83 seconds.
The teenage swimmer continued her supremacy in the second round, where she extended her lead to 0.60 seconds by completing her first half of the race with a phenomenal time of 54.90 seconds. She was chased by the 24-year-old Vollmer, who enveloped the equivalent distance with a timing of 55.50 seconds.
Vollmer elevated her efforts in the third round, where she seemed eager towards crossing Franklin for the final lap but she failed to overwhelm notable efforts of Franklin, who ended her 150 metres of the swim with a timing of 1 minute and 24.14 seconds. She remained 0.72 seconds away from Vollmer, who remained second fastest swimmer by clocking a time of 1 minute and 24.86 seconds.
Inevitably, the stats remained same in final lap, where Franklin cemented her place on medal rostrum for gold medal by submitting a time of 1 minute and 53.19 seconds. She was followed by Vollmer, who stayed 0.73 seconds slower and clinched silver medal of the event with a timing of 1 minute and 53.92 seconds. Hoff occupied third fastest spot of the race as she remained 0.32 seconds behind and hit the wall with a timing of 1 minute and 54.24 seconds.
The arena applauded for Franklin’s tremendous effort in the freestyle discipline whereas the session ended after the conclusion of all listed events.
