Missy Franklin and Domin Meichtry win freestyle gold - 2011 Charlotte UltraSwim
Missy Franklin of Colorado Stars-C and Domin Meichtry of Trojan Swim Club earned gold medals in the Women’s and Men’s 200m freestyle on the second day of the 2011 North Carolina Charlotte UltraSwim on May 13.
The Charlotte UltraSwim is the second to last stop of the seven stops of the 2010-11 USA Grand Prix Series.
Missy Franklin, who rules the Grand Prix points table with her miraculous performance, won her first gold medal of the Charlotte Ultra Swim in the Women’s 200m freestyle. Franklin clocked a time of 1:57.66 minutes to earn the gold medal and was comfortably
under the World Championships A-Time Qualification Standard of 1:59.29 minutes. She was followed by Allison Schmitt of Unattached-GA and Dana Vollmer of California-PC, who followed her on the podium for the silver and bronze medal in a time of 1:58.18 and
1:59.65 minutes. Schmitt’s time was also under the World Championships Standard and qualified her for the American Squad to the 2011 World Championships in Shanghai this July.
Moments later, Trojan Swim Club’s Domin Meichtry demonstrated his tremendous swimming efforts in the Men’s 200m freestyle. Meichtry smashed the gold medal for the event with a timing of 1:48.55 minutes and his time was 0.18 seconds under the World Championships
qualification standard of 1:48.72 minutes. He was followed by the fastest qualifying swimmer into the final, Unattached-ST’s Richard Berens who touched the wall for silver medal in a time of 1:49.25 minutes. Meichtry’s team member, Markus Rogan followed them
on the podium for the bronze medal, posting a time of 1:49.47 minutes. Ryan Lochte of Dayton Beach-FL finished his swim in the fourth place, clocking a time of 1:49.48 minutes. Conor Dwyer and Michael Phelps finished their swims in fifth and sixth place in
a time of 1:49.56 and 1:49.89 minutes respectively.
The arena enjoyed some astounding efforts of the top eight finalists, as they battled it out for the podium finishes. The Charlotte Grand Prix will continue for two more days to complete all the swimming events in the Men’s and Women’s category.
