Missy Franklin and Rebecca Soni dominate preliminary rounds in style: 2011 Charlotte UltraSwim
American swimming champions, Missy Franklin and Rebecca Soni dominated the preliminary rounds of their swims on the second day of the 2011 North Carolina Charlotte UltraSwim, hosted by SwimMAC Carolina.
The session included the preliminary rounds of the 200m freestyle, 100m breast-stroke, 100m butterfly and the 400m Individual Medley (IM) in the Women’s category.
The day started with the breath-taking performance of the 16-year-old, Missy Franklin, in the 200m freestyle. Franklin occupied the fastest qualification spot into the finals, clocking 2:00.09 minutes. Missy’s tremendous timing placed her 0.40 seconds ahead
of her following swimmer, Chloe Sutton, who qualified as the second fastest swimmer into the finals. The third fastest qualification spot was secured by Barbara Jardin, who touched the wall in a time of 2:00.69 minutes.
Moments later, Rebecca Soni smashed the top qualification spot in the 100m breast-stroke, producing a time of 1:07.45 minutes. She was followed by Jessica Hardy and Jillian Tyler, who appeared second and third fastest on the wall in a time of 1:07.51 and
1:09.42 minutes, respectively.
In the 100m butterfly event, Unattached’s Elaine Breeden proved her eligibility for the fastest spot by posting a 59.44 seconds effort. Breeden was 0.21 seconds ahead of his following swimmer, Dana Vollmer, who touched the wall for second fastest qualification
with timing of 59.65 seconds. Chris Magnuson followed them into the finals as the third fastest swimmer, by clocking an impressive time of 1:00.30 minutes.
After few minutes, the crowd enjoyed the superb effort of Katinka Hosszu, claiming the fastest qualification spot in the 400m IM. Hosszu clocked a time of 4:34.68 minutes, to emerge as the fastest swimmer into the final. She was followed by Justine Mueller
and Elizabeth Biesel, who transpired as the second and third fastest swimmer in 4:43.67 and 4:45.01 minutes, respectively.
The Charlotte swim is the second last stop of the 2010-11 USA Grand Prix Series and will conclude after the completion of all swimming events on May 15, 2011. The event is sure to be a thrilling one, as swimmers are putting in their best efforts to win accolades.
