Missy Franklin seizes Women’s 200m freestyle gold – 2013 Arena Grand Prix
Missy Franklin of Colorado Stars-C seized gold medal of the Women’s 200m freestyle on opening day of the 2013 Arena Grand Prix in Colorado, USA, on Thursday, February 14.
The 17-year-old Franklin, who devastated hopes of her challengers in the four-lap freestyle discipline, made no mistake in the playoff and raked gold medal. With her exceptional pace, she enjoyed a comfortable lead over her challenger and secured the title.
She enjoyed a benefit of almost two body lengths over her closest competitor and surfaced on the finishing end for first position with the timing of 1 minute and 58.01 seconds.
The gold medallist was traced by Samantha Cheverton of Pointe-Claire, who was 2.09 seconds behind and emerged on the finishing end for silver medal by touching the wall with the timing of 2 minutes and 00.10 seconds.
The second best finisher was trailed by Becca Mann of Clearwater Aquatics, who stayed only 0.17 seconds away from improving her position and finished third in the race by touching the wall with an effort of 2 minutes and 00.28 seconds.
Fourth fastest spot of the race was obtained by Barbara Jardin of PPO, who stayed more than half a body length behind and touched the wall with an effort of 2 minutes and 00.92 seconds.
Jardin was traced by Nicole Stafford of Dynamo Swim Club, who stayed nearly two seconds slower and clocked a time of 2 minutes and 02.86 seconds for fifth place.
Sixth position of the race was obtained by Saskia Roschinsky of Germany, who stayed only 031 seconds slower and clocked an effort of 2 minutes and 03.17 seconds.
Roschinsky was followed by Ashley Steenvoorden of Unattached-MN, who stayed 0.21 seconds slower from her former finisher and posted a time of 2 minutes and 03.38 seconds.
Last spot of the race was secured by Kathleen Baker of SwimMAC Carolina, who stayed 0.16 seconds slower from her foregoing finisher and posted a time of 2 minutes and 03.54 seconds.
Furthermore, Franklin received a huge round of applause from the crowd for her gruelling efforts and received accolade after the session.
