Missy Franklin sets American record in Women’s 100m backstroke – 2012 London Olympic Games
American specialist, Missy Franklin won gold medal of the Women’s 100m backstroke on third day of the swimming events at the 2012 London Olympic Games in London Aquatic Centre on Monday, July 30.
The 17-year-old Franklin not only accomplished the top spot on the podium but also set the new American record of the discipline. With her fascinating efforts, she remained comfortably ahead of her opponents in the second half and secured the title.
She showed no mercy to her challengers throughout the double lap backstroke discipline and rushed her way towards the finishing blockade for gold medal by clocking a wonderful effort of 58.33 seconds.
The gold medallist was followed by Australian veteran, Emily Seebohm, who stayed 0.35 seconds apart and finished second in the discipline by producing a nice time of 58.68 seconds.
The second position holder was chased by Aya Terakawa of Japan, who stayed only 0.15 seconds slower from her foregoing finisher and stepped on the medal rostrum for bronze medal by posting a time of 58.83 seconds.
Subsequently, Terakawa was trailed by Anastasia Zueva of Russian Federation, who remained only 0.07 seconds slower from her foregoing finisher and hit the finishing wall for fourth position with the timing of 59.00 seconds for fourth position.
Fifth finest spot of the race was secured by Gemma Spofforth of Great Britain, who remained 0.20 seconds slower and tapped the wall with an effort of 59.20 seconds.
Spofforth was followed by Jing Zhao of China, who stayed only 0.03 seconds slower from her former finisher and secured sixth fastest spot of the discipline by reporting an effort of 59.23 seconds.
Zhao was traced by Belinda Hocking of Australia, who remained 0.06 seconds slower from her preceding finisher and tapped the finishing blockade with the timing of 59.29 seconds.
Eighth position of the race was obtained by Yuanhui Fu of China, who stayed one and a half body length behind and tapped the wall with an effort of 1 minute and 00.50 seconds.
In addition, Franklin was delighted with her national record-breaking effort in the backstroke discipline after the event.
