Question:

Misting system in my horses stall?

Ok this question goes kinda with the other one i asked. If i choose to keep him where he is in the metal barn, i would really like to put a misting system in his stall. It gets 100 degrees plus the entire summer in that stall, and he is in there all day long and only gets out at night.

Anyone use a mistiing system?

Do you think my horse would like it?

  1. A misting system sounds okay, except your horse might spook if he doesn't know where the water is coming from. Make sure you introduce him to being misted before you put it in his stall.

Also, because of the water coming out, you may have to change the bedding a bit more than usual, so make sure the setting on the mister isn't too high.

As for whether your horse would like it... it depends on whether your horse likes getting wet. One of my horses LOVES getting wet (he'll come between the hose and the trough I'm filling) but one of our mares HATES getting wet, and always has her ears pinned back whenever we have to give her a bath.

If he hates water, don't put it in and add an extra stress. Just make sure that there is plenty of water for him to drink and he should be fine. :)

  2. If your area is dry maybe a misting system makes sense...the ability to sweat depends on the ability of the circulating air to provide evaporation which cools the body.  If the mist just adds to the humidity, it will actually stop your horse from sweating and increase his internal body temperature.  When the environment is wet (humid), evaporation doesn't happen.  A fan will produce cooling by convection, allowing a sweating horse to be cooled as the sweat evaporates. I would not buy it.  When we hose our horses, we do the legs to cool the blood that will circulate and cool the body.  Any water on the rest of the body is evaporated and further cools the body when air movement hits the water, producing evaporation.

  3. i just bought a lil $20 one today for my patio, my kids love it, why not your horse. the mist is really fine and it makes the surrounding area much cooler, it's very comforting, but if its too breezy the horse may not feel it much

  4. He will probably love it! Be sure and put a fan in his stall, too.

  5. he would LOVE IT
