Mitchell Kilduff occupies Boys 100m freestyle gold: Day three – Australian Age MC Championships
The 15-year-old Mitchell Kilduff continued his winning streak by occupying the title of 15 to 16 years old Boys 100m freestyle final on the final day of the 2011 Australian Age Multi Class (MC) Championships. The competition was held at the Australian Institute
of Sport (AIS), Canberra, on Sunday, October 9.
The 15-year-old Kilduff added another gold medal to his medal tally by obtaining the title of 100m event. With his immaculate efforts, he not only won the gold medal but also highlighted himself as a vital player of the Australian disability swimming team.
Kilduff’s opponent, Hayden McGuigan of Mornington, tried to initiate a neck-to-neck swim, but failed to accomplish his goal in the first lap. Kilduff, S14, went full throttle after the start and earned a prominent lead over his competitors by finishing his
lap in a time of 27.53 seconds. He was 3.09 seconds ahead of McGuigan in the first-half as he posted a time of 30.62 seconds.
In the next lap, Kilduff geared up his swim and ended his race with a timing of 30.31 seconds to post 57.84 seconds on the screen. He was the only swimmer to post a sub one minute effort as McGuigan ended his second-half of the race in 32.46 seconds to submit
a 1 minute and 03.08 seconds time on the board.
In the same manner, McGuigan overwhelmed the efforts of his following swimmers and kept them at bay for silver medal. He was followed by Reagan Wickens of NSW SLC Aquadot, who remained 15.79 seconds slower than his former finisher and hit the finishing wall
for third position. The 16-year-old Wickens, who has S6 multi class disability, posted a nice time of 1 minute and 18.87 seconds to earn bronze medal.
Kilduff received a huge round of applause from the audience for his incredible timing. The gold medallist expressed his desire of continuing the same in future events. In addition, the three-day championship concluded after the completion of its scheduled
events while the winners were awarded accolades after the session.
