Mitchell Krueger, Liam Broady proceed to the second round of Boys’ Singles – US Open 2011
Mitchell Krueger beats Dominic Thiem 6-2, 6-2
American Mitchell Krueger upset seventh seed Dominic Thiem of Austria in straight sets 6-2, 6-2 in the opening round of the boys’ singles event of the US Open at the Flushing Meadows in New York on Monday. The match lasted for
just 59 minutes.
Krueger took an early lead, breaking the Austrian in the third game and winning his following service game to go ahead 3-1. The American broke again in the seventh game and served out the set at 5-2. The unseeded fired two aces
and kept his first serve percentage at 67 percent, converting twelve of the fourteen first serves into points in the opening set.
In the second set, the American grabbed lead straightaway as he broke Thiem in the first game and consolidated on, going up 2-0. Kruger did not stop and broke the Austrian for the second time in the fifth game and capitalised on
the double break of serve to claim the set 6-2. The American served brilliantly, converting an amazing nine of the ten points on the first serve and seven of the eight points on the second serve in the second set.
Krueger is slated to meet unseeded Kyle Edmund of Great Britain in the second round.
Liam Broady defeats Stefano Napolitano 6-1, 6-1
Ninth seed Liam Broady of Great Britain knocked out Italian Stefano Napolitano in straight sets to qualify for the second round. The Brit allowed his opponent to win just two games in the entire match and won it 6-1, 6-1 in just
58 minutes.
Broady made an impressive start as he won opening three games, breaking the Italian in the second game and holding his next service game to grab a 3-0 lead. The Brit broke again in the sixth game and utilised the double break of
serve, bagging the set 6-1. The 17-year-old delivered three aces and sealed eleven of the fourteen first service points in the opening set.
The Brit kept the winning momentum on his side, thrashing his opponent again in the second set. Broady dropped only one game and broke the Italian three times to win the set 6-1. The right-handed smacked two aces and did not lose
even a single point on the first serve, winning all the six first service points in the second set. The Brit capitalised on three of the four break point opportunities he created on Napolitano’s serve in the second set.
Broady is drawn to face unseeded Mate Delic of Croatia in the second round.
