Mitchell Phelps and Jacob Mendelson pocket Boys 50-yard freestyle gold: 2011 WPSC Holiday Sprints
Mitchell L Phelps and Jacob Mendelson of GOST-NI demonstrated their heart-winning efforts by pocketing gold medals of Boys 50-yard freestyle in their respective age groups at the 2011 Whitney Point Swim Club (WPSC) Holiday Sprints on Thursday, December 29,
2011.
Phelps proved his mettle in the Boys 13-14 years class while Mendelson dominated the similar event in 15 and above category.
The 13-year-old Phelps showed his urgency towards the finishing wall by gaining gold medal of the opening event of the session with a splendid effort of 25.57 seconds. He was trailed by Bryan M Solomon of WAAC-NI, who remained nearly one second slower than
Phelps and emerged on the concluding wall for silver medal with a timing of 26.44 seconds. Similarly, Dylan J Richmond remained only 0.13 seconds away from the second position holder and ended third by clocking a time of 26.57 seconds.
Moments later, the arena witnessed a remarkable effort of 18-year-old Mendelson, who clinched the title of 50-yard event by submitting a time of 23.92 seconds. The gold medallist was followed by Kurt R Grunder of CVSC-NI, who reached the podium for silver
medal by completing his swim in a time of 24.15 seconds. Frank Z Chen of WAAC-NI secured third fastest spot of the race as he reported a time of 24.41 seconds.
In the meantime, Jeffrey Gao of WAA-NI won the title of 50-yard backstroke in Boys 13-14 years age category. Gao claimed top spot of the race by ending his swim in a finest time of 31.17 seconds. He was chased by METS-NI’s Daniel R Mullen and his team-member,
Caelan M Haney, who stepped on the podium for second and third position with timings of 33.19 and 38.91 seconds, respectively.
Next was the equivalent event in Boys 15 and above class, where Grunder made no mistake and occupied the title of the race with a struggle of 27.29 seconds. He was traced by Chen and Altan Z Frantz of WAAC-NI, who concluded their swims with timings of 27.92
and 30.55 seconds for silver and bronze finish respectively.
The arena was delighted with the ruthless efforts of all age group swimmers whereas the winners received their awards after the session.
