Mitchell Watt aims for a gold medal in Daegu - IAAF World Championships in Athletics
After securing his rather unexpected bronze medal at the 2009 IAAF World Championships in Berlin, Australian track and field athlete, Mitchell Watt, who specialises in Long Jump, has expressed his resolve to embark on the gold medal in this year’s high-profile
heated event. He also holds the current Oceania record of 8.54m.
The 23-year old athlete, who is a new face on the world athletics arena, was of the view that settling for lesser than the gold will definitely be a failure for him. The claim by the Australian to go for a gold does not seem unrealistic, as he has already
marked four of the longest jumps in the world, this season.
It is perhaps due to the potential that he has been showing on the track this entire year that while discussing the prospects of a lesser reward, the athlete turned out to be a little arrogant, and said, “I’d be disappointed with another bronze medal. I
think that is the difference between then and now. Then (at the 2009 World Championships in Berlin) I was happy to just make the final, but this year I want the gold.”
No matter what results Watt ends up with, the well-justified claims aired by him just a week ahead of the Daegu event, show the state of positive mindedness with which he is going to face his rivals. This year, while appearing in long-jumping contests, he
has dominated ten out of 12 events he participated in.
Grappling for a title in Melbourne and Shanghai, he twice landed for an 8.44m mark, while in London; he pushed the distance further to a staggering 8.45m. Building on with his winning streak bit-by-bit, he leapt to an over-awing 8.54m in Stockholm.
Despite producing some of the finest results this year, he has not given up with his extensive training aimed at raising the bar of performance for him on a daily basis. The results he has produced so far are perhaps the depiction of the fact that the young
athlete has got all the ingredients to claim and bag the world title this season in Daegu.
