Mitchell Wheller powers his way into pre quarter-finals of 2012 Australian Closed Championships
Queensland’s Mitchell Wheller played with great conviction and cast out Cheesun Choong to secure a spot in the pre quarter-finals of Australian Closed Championships Sydney on August 29, 2012.
Though, this second round match concluded in just 28 minutes but still both shuttlers entertained the crowd with a commendable show of skills before piling up final figures of 21-18 and 23-21.
Men’s Singles expert Mitchell displayed superior finishing skills and sealed a splendid straight-set victory.
Now he will be up against another talented campaigner, Rowan Henderson in the third round and a win will secure his berth in the quarter-final round of the championships.
Mitchell set the foundation of his supremacy by pocketing the very first match point on merit. He launched a brisk attack and cornered his challenger in all areas of the game.
At first, he mounted pressure by gaining an early advantage and then doubled the impact with couple of consecutive points before the interval.
Later part of the game was filled with great excitement as the opposing shuttler managed to rise on his toes and counter-balanced the situation.
Cheesun Choong pocketed some valuable points in a row and put his competitor on the back-foot. He maintained same momentum in the next couple of rallies and strengthened his grip over the game.
However, Mitchell put his expedition to a halt by launching an effective counter-attack strategy. He put all in his possession to reinstate his dominance and hit the mark with 21-18 score on the board.
The second set, which proved a decider later, was also played in the same manner as the Queensland shuttler established an immediate lead and then stole the limelight despite putting up a fluctuated performance.
In first half of the set, Mitchell served notice of his supremacy by controlling his opponent technically and tactically.
He was enjoying the upper hand when a couple of unforced errors brought him down just before half time.
Cheesun Choong relished full benefits of his rival’s blunder and placed a respectable total of 11. He managed to go with the same flow all the way to the third quarter of the set.
At this stage, Mitchell struck hard and tipped the scale in his favour with a decisive figure of 23-21.
