The budding shuttler Mithun Manjunath played his heart out and claimed the crown after beating Rohit Karnatak in the title match of the Belgaum 3 Star Karnataka State Ranking Badminton Tournament on September 4, 2012.
This game lasted for two hard fought sets as both contenders put all they had to read final figures of 21-18 and 21-17.
The local badminton arena of Belgaum, India was filled to the brim as a huge crowd assembled to encourage the youngsters.
Both shuttlers kept the spectators glued to their chairs by displaying commendable badminton craft on the court and their honest effort was applauded by the audience.
Mithun, who was underrated earlier in this tournament, played with great conviction and registered his class with a splendid straight-set victory.
He set the ball rolling straight away in the opening game when he pushed his competitor on the back-foot with a flurry of power packed strokes.
Rohit could not withstand this intensive invasion and remained busy just in returning those well placed strokes.
Mithun capitalised this early advantage in the next couple of rallies and piled up an indomitable total of 11 before one-minute break.
Later part of the game brought life back into the contest as the opposing shuttler geared himself up and narrowed the gap with a couple of productive rallies in a row.
However, Mithun did not show any sign of bewilderment and reinstated his dominance in the third quarter of the set. He served notice of his supremacy with an impressive knock of 21-18.
The following set was played in similar fashion as at one stage Rohit was in strong position to wrap this segment of the showdown in a favourable manner but then the opposing shuttler turned his plans into dust.
In the first half of the set, Rohit mounted pressure with some back-to-back points and kept his competitor at the lower end until half time.
Both shuttlers were locked in a tough competition as Mithun was striving for a straight-set win whereas Rohit was looking to level the match score.
This cliff-hanging set ended when Mithun earned the right to raise the trophy with a winning margin of 21-17.
