Mitsubishi Electric Championship kicks off the 2012 Champions Tour - Golf News
The Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai kicked off the 2012 Champions Tour, with John Cook and Tom Lehman finishing the opening round on top of the leaderboard.
There are a total of 23 events scheduled for the 2012 Champions Tour. Apart from the 2012 PGA Tour, Hawaii also had the honour of hosting the Champions Tour’s curtain-raiser this year.
There are 41 players in total who are making their appearances in a winners-only event.
Moreover, the participants also include former Ryder Cup captains, members of the World Hall of Fame, and even some of the players who are above 60 years of age.
Cook entered the course with an aim to defend the title that he won a year ago, defeating Lehman, with a two-stroke margin.
His consecutive five birdies in the final round of the 2011 Mitsubishi Electric Championship proved to be a major breakthrough in his win.
After the first round of the tournament, Cook was pleased with his performance, especially sharing the lead with a person who gave him a hard time last year. However, this year, he is better prepared and will look to repeat his usual form.
On the other hand, Lehman is aiming to convert his last year’s runner-up position into a victory.
He lost to Cook despite displaying a superb game on the course. It was not him who lost the event. In fact, it was Cook who snatched the victory from him.
However, he was not disappointed at that time and continued to perform well on the Tour. He recorded three victories in 2011 and earned $2.1 million as prize money to take the money list title along, with the Champions Tour Player of the Year award.
Currently, he has an edge over his competitors at Hualalai because of a high morale and confidence that he has brought from his latest season.
It will be interesting to watch in the remaining rounds of the tournament, how both these players continue with their game.
Whatever the result of the tournament may be, it is expected that there will an interesting competition between the winners of the last Champions Tour season.
