Mitsubishi TV, 52 inch-DLP, is it common for the Lamp to go out?

I can turn on the TV, and it starts to show a picture but it turns itself off after about 30 seconds. And a red light comes on. I can reset and try again, but same thing happens. Looking thru the troubleshooting guide points to a faulty lamp in the back. Was just wondering if it is a common failure, and how much do they cost?

  1. Very common.  Although some people can get maybe 2 years or better out of a lamp, some get less than a year, and on average, expect to replace it at least once a year.

I think that Mitsubishi offers one lamp replacement under warranty within 12 or 24 months, and after that, you have to pay for it.  Lamps can cost between $150 - $300, depending on type, and where you buy it from.  The lamp in mine lists at $239, but I can order it from other companies for $159.

Any LCD sets over 42" need a special lamp for backlighting.

  2. Unfortunately, yes.

But you might want to check to see if it's under warranty.  I think most manufacturers will replace the lamp if it goes out prematurely.
