Mixed doubles medal is the only hope for Agnieszka Radwanska – Tennis News
World number two, Agnieszka Radwanska, had a terrible reality check at the London Olympics Games when she was ousted by the 24th ranked German starlet, Julia Goerges, in the opening round clash.
Radwanska was handed over the responsibility of being the flag-bearer of Poland having stated a strong impression throughout the season with some blistering victories and advancement in the world rankings. The best of her achievements
included the titles in the Dubai Duty Free Championships at Dubai, Sony Ericsson Open at Miami and the Brussels Open. She was also the finalist at the year’s third Grand Slam tournament, the Wimbledon Championships.
So the last time she played at Wimbledon, she was the finalist but at London Olympics, she was the victim of the biggest upset of Day 2. Following her loss in the opening round, the 23-year-old expressed her despair at losing out
early in the hunt for a gold medal in the press conference stating, “It's always tough to lose in the first round. I still felt like there was a chance, but I didn't play my best tennis in a couple of important moments, and that's why the score is like it
is. It was a really tough match. She played very well.”
She further added, "I'm not in singles anymore, so I hope we can do better in doubles, and I'll also play the mixed doubles. And then I go to Montréal and Cincinnati, maybe New Haven, we'll see how it goes; and of course after
that, the US Open."
Furthermore, the doubles partnership of pole sisters, Agnieszka Radwanska and Urszula Radwanska, was saw a close defeat at the hands of the American duo, Liezel Huber and Lisa Raymond, on the eve of Tuesday.
So, her double campaign also ends at this note and she is only left in the mixed doubles category at Olympics. She will team up with her compatriot, Marcin Matkowski, and take up the Aussie duo, Samantha Stosur and Lleyton Hewitt,
on Wednesday. They are seeded fourth in the mixed doubles category and Radwanska hopes to bring her fans some glory by winning a medal with Matkowski.
It has been a terrible second tour of Wimbledon for the Pole superstar who has achieved a lot of acclaim in the recent past. However, this reality check will help her groom further in the field of tennis.
