Mixed feelings for Torvar Mirsky as The Wave Muscat heads for Monsoon Cup in Malaysia
So far, seven stages of the 2011 International Sailing Federation (ISAF) World Match Racing Tour have been completed. The last and final regatta of the season, 2011 Monsoon Cup, will be held at Kuala Terengganu in Malaysia from November 22-27.
The event will be an opportunity for The Wave Muscat skipper, Torvar Mirsky, to silence his critics. The leader has mixed feelings due to the responsibility he holds before going into the competition.
The Wave Muscat has won two consecutive events under the leadership of Mirsky, this season. Mirsky wants to do something big for his team this time and believes that if they do not lift the ISAF Match Racing World Championship 2011 trophy at the conclusion
of 2011 Monsoon Cup, he will be the reason behind the loss of his squad.
Mirsky knows the bittersweet feeling of being on top of the standings, as he has secured ISAF World Match Racing podium finishes in the past two years but still he feels there is a lot of pressure and responsibility on his shoulders.
Speaking to the media about his concerns, Mirsky said, “The team won't be happy if we don't win this World Championship. In previous years we've finished second and third, it won't be fun to do that again. Our season won't necessarily be a failure if we
don't win, I mean we've given it everything and we've learnt so much within our team and ourselves, and have got our names out there into the sailing world. But, this season is different. We've never wanted this title more.”
The former world champion added, “I don't think having two wins already behind us adds any pressure. Williams is going to be a strong team and will prepare well. The pressure we face is with our preparation, we will struggle with that.”
As far as the current standings of Match Racing circuit are concerned, Mirsky’s The Wave Muscat is currently on third place with 99.8 points behind Bruni Racing's Francesco Bruni and Team GAC Pindar skipper, Ian Williams. The overall 2011 ISAF Match Racing
World Championship will be crowned at the end of the decider 2011 Monsoon Cup.
Overall Championship Standings after 7 stages:
1. Ian Williams (GBR) Team GAC Pindar = 106 points
2. Francesco Bruni (ITA) Bruni Racing = 100 points
3. Torvar Mirsky (AUS) The Wave Muscat = 99.8 points
4. Peter Gilmour (AUS) YANMAR Racing = 78.8 points
5. Bjorn Hansen (SWE) Mekonomen Sailing Team = 75 points
6. Damien Iehl (FRA) French Match Racing Team = 74 points

8. Jesper Radich (DEN) Adrian Lee & Partners = 71.2 points
9. Mathieu Richard (FRA) French Match Racing Team = 69.6 points
