Mixed martial artist Nick Diaz decides against venturing into boxing – Boxing news
American professional mixed martial artist Nicholas Robert Diaz, who is currently the Strikeforce Welterweight Champion and former WEC and IFC Welterweight Champion, has decided against venturing into boxing.
The news from a boxing promoter stunned everyone at the time when he announced less than a month ago that Diaz is in a contractual relationship with IBF super middleweight former champion Jeff Lacy but the same promoter said that Diaz would be very happy
to take on mixed martial arts.
Nick’s fight promoter Don Chargin said, “Nick is a good kid and a very exciting fighter, Right now, he has an opportunity of a lifetime as it pertains to his MMA career. While I don’t doubt that Nick and his team were serious about taking the big step into
boxing, it only makes sense for him to finish what he started and see how far he can go in MMA before he does anything in boxing.”
Recently, the 27 year-old welterweight contender Diaz arranged a meeting to discuss his possible options to go against UFC officials in Las Vegas.
Diaz has already mentioned that he would not be up for boxing, if a fight with UFC champion Georges St. Pierre is made possible.
According to UFC president Dana White, there is nothing wrong with the negotiations between St. Pierre and Diaz. He said the chances of the fight to take place by the end of the year in Montreal are very bright. Adding to this, White said that they were
up for it but there was a lot to decide upon.
There has been a lot of talk about Diaz that he is in negotiations with a couple of boxing stars to remain active in boxing such as with Fernando Vargas and current middleweight champion Sergio Martinez. According to his contract with Strikeforce, he was
allowed to go against any fighter of his choice in 2011.
Diaz’s manager Cesar Gracie said, “There are some people that have said we were just posturing to go into professional boxing, and they don't understand this thing is something we had been working on since 2009. There's a certain chance that comes along
once in a very long while and it only makes sense to stick to MMA as of right now.”
