Mixed positions for Kiwi sailing teams at 2011 Perth ISAF Sailing World Championship
The Perth International Sailing Federation (ISAF) Sailing World Championship 2011 is underway in Western Australia and sailors from New Zealand had a frustrating run in their respective classes, as the Kiwi sailors concluded Day 12 with mixed finishes in
Perth. Only Jo Aleh and Olivia Powrie of 470 Women fleet could win a race to top their compatriots.
Weather conditions were a major factor for the ups and downs of Kiwi squad. The patches of heavy winds troubled them throughout the day. Due to these problems, the men’s RS:X and 49er fleets could not complete all of the scheduled races on Day 12.
In the 49er fleet, Peter Burling and Blair Tuke had a bit of misfortune during their competitions on Perth waters. They could only sail in two races, instead of scheduled three, and secured a third and 12th place to finish on sixth spot.
The RS:X Men’s fleet had 89 competitors, who could only commence one race on the 12th day because the first race was abandoned due to a mix up between the sea breeze and offshore sailors. The race restarted to feature Tom Ashley on fifth and JP
Tobin on 12th position in the overall standings.
The only team who could win a race on Day 12 was of Jo Aleh and Olivia Powrie in 470 Women category. They sailed in two races and picked up a seventh and a first podium place to claim sixth rank in the overall standing of the fleet.
In the Men’s Laser fleet, Andrew Murdoch set sail in two races. He was quite brilliant in the first race and finished second in the 147-sailor fleet. However, the second race did not prove to be a superb one for the Kiwi sailor, as he crossed the finish
line on 10th number. With a second and 10th finish, Murdoch hit the overall 10th position.
