Mixed results for Malaysia in SCG Thailand Open 2012 – Badminton News
It was mixed day for Malaysia in SCG Thailand Open as its Singles campaigners failed to rise while Doubles flank charged and conquered CU Sports Complex in Bangkok on June 7, 2012.
Men’s Singles squad disappointed their supporters by failing in third round of the event. Their morale went down when talented shuttler Arif Abdul Latif surrendered against Sony Dwi Kuncoro of Indonesia.
Though he showed strong character in 74-minute tussle but knelt down after reading 20-22, 21-19 and 21-15.
This triggered the collapse as his team mate Soo Teck Zhi crashed out after losing to Sameer Verma of India while Goh Soon Huat failed to stand against young Chinese Chen Yuekun.
On the other hand, Men’s Doubles line-up was led by the duo of Thien How-Wee Kiong who paved path to quarter-finals of tournament after beating the Taipei couple Huang Po Jui-Liao Min Chun in just two games with 22-20 and 21-16.
They will now lock horns with Japanese pair Yoshiteru Hirobe-Kenta Kazuno and the survivor of this clash of the titans will secure a spot in semi-final round.
Next chapter of this victory saga was even more impressive as the twosome of Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif-Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari emerged as victor in an epic tussle with compatriots Low Juan Shen and Tan Yip Jiun.
Both teams strived hard for three gruelling sets before reaching at conclusion with 21-14, 12-21, and 25-23.
Now, nation is expecting Zakry-Fairuz to take revenge from Korean challengers Kang Ji Wook-Lee Sang Joon who cast out another Malaysian duo Tan Wee Gieen-Calvin Ong in pre quarter-finals.
The Mixed Doubles campaigners Ong Jian Guo-Lim Yin Loo also sent good news back home by surging into round of eight after stamping Singaporean shuttlers Terry Yeo-Dellis Yuliana.
Though, they survived with respectable totals of 21-17, 10-21 and 21-18 but real challenge awaits them in quarter-finals where they are scheduled to meet top ranked pair Joachim Fischer Nielsen-Christinna Pedersen of Denmark.
However, all was not well for Malaysia as its Men’s Doubles experts Chooi Kah Ming-Ow Yao Han and Women's Doubles couple Wong Pei Tty-Chin Eei h*i crashed out of second round after losing to Ricky Karanda Suwardi-Muhammad Ullinuha and Lam Narissapat-Saralee
Thungthongkam respectively.
