Mizuno Classic 2012: Angela Stanford inside top 10 in second round
Angela Stanford is one of the two Americans who stood inside the top 10 in the second round of Mizuno Classic 2012.
Stanford posted a 71 on Saturday to take the share of third position along with four other contenders, but her performance markedly exceeded what most of her nearest rivals did in the second round.
Having got off to a rollicking start on Friday as she carded a 69 to tie for the third, Stanford has maintained her grip on her game and she is expected to carry on in the same pace in the third and final round.
So far, South Koreans and Japanese have done well, blocking players from the United States and Europe from moving to the top positions, but Stacy Lewis has also toughened up following a 71 in the first round.
Lewis fired a 70 on Saturday to stay at the eighth position along with seven other contenders. She made solid strokes on the greens throughout the day, despite cold conditions.
Stanford started her second round with a birdie on the first hole, but had to face a bogey on the next. She regained her composure quickly and fired her second birdie on the par-4 fourth hole.
On the front nine, her performance was not that solid as she carded three bogeys. On the back nine, she improved her position with the help of two birdies on the 13th and 15th hole.
Players complained of windy weather on the first day, which made the greens more difficult to play on.
South Korean Na Yeon Choi displayed a marvellous performance in the first round, shooting a 69.
“I think only one putt was short on the last hole. Other than that hole, my putter was at good speed every hole. I think I putted very aggressive today. That’s why I played well. I had four birdies today. But I think my putter was great, if I compare my shots,” said Choi who is being regarded as favourite for the tournament.
“Conditions are always great on this course. I played here the last five or six years and the course is always in good shape. But there’s usually not much wind at this course”.
