Question:

Mizuno vs Titleist?

I am looking to get new wedges. Can anyone tell me (FROM EXPERIENCE) what the advant/disadvantages are to each? I can get the mizuno's for alot cheaper, but I want the best wedges. I know that wedge preference is a very personal thing, but I'm just trying to find out what others think. I think the spin milled provide more spin than mizunos, but mizunos supposedly have more control and feel. Thanks

  1. neither taylormade tp wedges are the best

  2. tileist are way better

  3. You are right.  Vokey SM promotes more spin on the ball and makes it easier to stop the ball on the green.

    When I was shopping for a set of wedges, I tested Callaway X-Forged, Cleveland CG14, Mizuno MP-R and Vokey 200 & SM.  I picked out the lob wedge with the minimum bounce for each model and hit about 10 balls with each club, emulating different types of shots - chip, pitch and flop.

    Since I have a set of Mizuno MP-57 irons, I "wanted" to like the MP-R's and kept telling myself that my bag would look really nice with all Mizuno clubs....(i'm kinda weird that way).

    After hitting about 40-50 balls, I purchased the Vokey SM and here's why:

    PROS

    ====

    1) buttery feel - surprisingly soft feel for a non-forged wedge.... even softer than CG14.

    2) classic tear drop shape - can't go wrong with that.

    3) bite - since my swing is more of a slider than digger, i haven't seen any back spin on the ball, but it does stop the ball quicker on the green.

    4) sole - very versatile.  flop shots are easier with this club.

    CONS

    ====

    1) ball eather - chews up balls like there's no tomorrow.  If it can chew up range balls that much, imagine how much it can eat up softer balls.  personally, i don't mind.

    2) cha ching - costs more than the rest.

    I really can't list any pros and cons for MP-R (or for the rest of the wedges, for that matter) because it kinda got blended in with the rest of the clubs....  nothing spectacular...  nothing horrible.

    So, here's what I have: MP-57 irons + Vokey 252, 256, SM 60.  I call them my butter knives....  :-)

    Good Luck!

  4. The new spin comes from the New grooves and the clean clubface. I say the mizunos are better on full shots, and the titleist are better around the green. I had the mizuno t series 52 degree for ever. I still use it for practice. The grooves are worn, but it is still great. 115 yards of butter. i also had the bob vokey 56 degree and 60. They were great around the greens, and the ball checked way better with these than the mizuno. The loft did help that too.  You may look into the Taylormade Z wedges too. I bought mine and havent gone back to titleist or mizuno wedges.
