i have a dvd player that upconverts to 1080i and plays avi files

its possible to convert a mkv file to an avi file and play it at 720p or 1080i in my dvd player

my dvd player is the Samsung DVD-HD870

  1. MKV and AVI are both video containers, they do not refer to the particular codec used to encode the video or audio, but it is fairly simple to convert from one to another.

    A program called AllToAvi (http://alltoavi.sourceforge.net/) is a free open source solution. You just need to know what codec is being used to encode the video and make sure it is compatible with your DVD player.

    As for resolution that's something you can set within AllToAvi, but if your source video is at a lower resolution than 720p it's not going to look very good if you encode it at 720p. A certain amount of upconversion can be done, but it's like zooming in on a digital picture, after a certain point the pixels become extremely noticeable.

    It's something you'll need to play with to find how far you can push it, assuming you don't actually have some kind of HD video source, but you should be able to get all of what you want out of that program.
