We must come to see that the end we seek is a society at peace with itself, a society that can live with its conscience. That will be the day not of white man, not of the black man. That will be the day of man as man.

  1. I think Tellit2Me has basically gotten it right.

Dr. King was talking about a just and peaceful society that has moved beyond racism to a respect for, and concern for, all humanity.

  2. What MLK was saying is that the ultimate goal of justice (so that the people of society can know they have done the right thing, be at peace with themselves and not have a guilty conscience) must be to arrive at a time when everything is about humankind. The focus of society must gain a place where everything is looked at a mankind as a whole, not what is right or powerful for whites (day of white man) or blacks (day of black man), but how to make society just, peaceful, equitable for all people of every color, without regard to color. At that point race becomes incidental and not a defining consideration in decisions and actions.
