Mo Farah wins gold medal
Britain had never won a gold medal in the men’s 10,000 metres at the European Championships until yesterday and just to top it off the UK took second place as well.
Mo Farah smashed in a 28 minutes and 24.99 seconds time to take gold and was followed over the line by fellow Briton Chris Thompson.
Farah was out in front for the majority of the race battling it out with Spaniard Ayad Landassem. It was a proper duel between the duo before Landssem started to wilt with two laps left.
Spain’s horror contrasted with British delight when Thompson came through along with Italian Daniele Meucci in a scrap for silver and bronze, leaving Landassem without a medal.
Farah was way out in front though and was delighted to take the victory. It made up for his silver medal in the 2006 European games and afterwards a jubilant Farah told TV viewers: "That was the greatest half-an-hour of my life".
Farah ran a great race and once Landassem started to go off the boil it was plain sailing for the Somalia –born Englishman. It was made all the sweeter by the fact his close friend Thompson romped over the line for second.
Farah, who was born in Somalia, has had a colourful life, from being a refugee to hard-partying antics, he has also had a turbulent time with injuries and had to find his focus before he hit his top form.
This is a well deserved win and a great start for Britain.
