Mo Williams sinks buzzer beating three as Utah Jazz overcome San Antonio Spurs: NBA Recap
Mo Williams sank a three pointer at the buzzer to lift Utah Jazz to a 99-96 win over the hot San Antonio Spurs at the EnergySolutions Arena Wednesday night, snapping the Spurs’ 5 game winning streak.
"My look was watching the clock and watching Mo, and watching the clock and watching Mo, and then watched that ball go through the basket as the clock went off and watching him run down the floor with his hands in the air was just
tremendous.” Jazz coach Tyrone Corbin commented after the win.
Paul Millsap was the MVP for the Jazz tonight with 24 points 12 rebounds; he went 10 of 15 from the floor. Al Jefferson also had a big night as he collected 21 points while Gordon Hayward came off the bench to add 19 points for
the winning cause.
Tim Duncan had a monstrous night, he gathered 22 points grabbed 21 rebounds and made 6 blocks. But, his exploits could not result in ‘W’ for the Spurs. Tony Parker also scored 22 points to lead the Spurs, who swept the Jazz in
the playoffs last year and had won 11 of their last 12 encounters with them.
Al Jefferson made a layup early in the period to make it 9-10 for the Jazz when the Spurs went for a 9 nil burst, jumping up to 19-9. San Antonio were up 26-16 with 2:16 minutes left in the quarter before Jazz reduced the deficit
down to 22-28.
Jazz kept inching closer and a Millsap layup made it 32-33 early in the second quarter. It was all square on 36 when the hosts shifted gears. A Duncan layup pulled the Spurs back to 44-46 but Utah went for a 7-nil spurt to close
the period and push their lead to 53-44 by halftime.
Utah kept their advantage intact for a while in the second half but the Spurs started slashing the deficit and a couple of free throws by Parker reduced the gap to 56-59. It was close for most of the period and the score was tied
on 71 at the end of the quarter.
The Spurs were up 94-88 with 3:33 on the regulation when Jazz went for a 6-0 run to tie the score. A Daniel Green jumper put the Spurs up by 2 with 1:27 seconds to go but Millsap tied it again on 96 with 40 seconds left. Parker
missed a jump shot and Jazz took full use of the 24 second window as Williams nailed a three pointer with just 1.3 seconds on the clock to seal the deal.
With wins over strong opponents in the form of Los Angeles Lakers and San Antonio Spurs, the Jazz will be looking to continue the good run when they face Phoenix Suns this Friday.
