I will be in Jamaica in July. We are planning to go to Reggae Sumfest. Is it smarter to stay in Mobay for thurs-sun then maybe Negril for the rest of the stay? We are 2 young ladies and concerned about travelling at night after the parties. What do you guys think?

  1. It is definately smarter to stay in mobay while attending sumfest. I am fairly used to making the 4-hour drive between KINGSTON and Mobay at odd hours of the night (or wee hours in the morning). Yet even i would NOT prefer to be driving the 45 minutes between mobay and negril REPEATEDLY during sumfest. Here are some good reasons to use the safer option:

    1. If you book early, simpler hotels (ie. breakfast only) are actually quite lower priced than negril hotels. You wont have time to do anything but sleep, eat breakfast and party, so why pay negril A.I. prices?

    2. You would both be free to smoke or drink without worrying about who will have to be sober or the long drive home. You will also be more inclined to stay till the end of each show, since fatigue will not be an issue. Cabs back to a Mobay hotel wont generally cost too much.

    3. You could do some Montego clubbing or afternoon sociallizing on some of the nights. Add some diversity to your vacation.

    4. SInce you may not have to rent a car, staying in Mobay will be even cheaper!

    5. Driving long distances at night in a complicated and unfamiliar environment just isn't ideal. What if it rains on the way?

    Sleepy + Wetroad + Unfamiliar.Area + drive.on.the.left = NOT SAFE and NOT FUN.

    EDIT:

    6. Also rememebr that road safety is about your driving habits AND the habits of others on the road. You dont want to be vulnerable as noted above, and in the path of a DRUNK driver speeding home after HIS sumfest escapade!

  2. That's a good plan. As long as your SOBER and FULLY AWAKE or u have a SOBER driver then you'll have no problem driving at night. Just remember, that in Jamaica we drive on the left bcuz i saw a tourist driving on the right Yesterday. He was very lucky.

  3. Just stay at home! Nothing bad will happen.
