Mobile Bay Classic roster strong without Yani Tseng, Michelle Wie
Mobile Bay Classic is going to start this week at Magnolia Grove’s Crossings Course, with a field excluding the current world number one Yani Tseng and the LPGA star Michelle Wie.
Yani Tseng, who has stood at the top spot in the Women’s World Golf Rankings for the last 63 weeks, kept the officials of the Mobile Bay LPGA Classic and the players curious about her possible participation.
However, the Taiwanese star informed the officials of her busy schedule, saying that she cannot take part in the tournament and will stay at her home town for the next few days.
On the other hand, Michelle Wie is also staying off the course. Despite the absence of the two key LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) players, analysts said the tournament will not be devoid of challenge, as the field already boasts a number of
competent players.
On the top of the list is Suzann Pettersen, who currently ranks third in the Women’s World Golf Rankings.
Pettersen looks quite pumped up after performing well in last week’s LPGA Lotte Championship. She finished 6th, highlighting that she is on the mend after staying winless in the current season.
She recorded her last victory in the Safeway Classic in August 2011. Pettersen had been struggling to break her victory drought for the last 20 months.
She finally ended the drought by winning the title at the Sybase Match Play Championship in May 2011.
Pettersen expressed in one of her recent interviews that she has been able to improve her game lately. She said that she made a solid plan for the current year, which worked.
The world number three said that she has been finding it difficult to make balanced putts, but working hard on the practice range has done the trick.
Analysts said that the tournament will still be competitive, even without the presence of the current world number one.
Although Tseng will not be able to further strengthen her position in the world rankings, analysts said that the young prodigy is unlikely to face a major threat from her nearest rivals.
However, Na Yeon Choi, who currently ranks second in the world rankings, will be trying to further boost her standing at Magnolia Grove’s Crossings Course.
Despite what goes on in the rankings, the tournament officials are quite happy to see several leading stars in the 144-player roster. They said that the field is featuring players who are famous enough to make the match lively.
